The Georgian House, St Anne, Alderney
Situated right in the centre of town, on Victoria Street, this pub with four rooms is a stylish and vibrant place to stay in St Annes. The bar and restaurant are popular with the local crowd so it's a great place to get a sense of the island and its community. The four rooms are named after rocks around the island and are full of little extras such as fudge and postcards on the bed when you arrive, hot water bottles and Noble Isle bath products. Breakfast is kippers from the fish shop across the road or sausages from nearby Kiln Farm (everywhere is nearby on an island just three miles by one and a half miles) and lunches and dinners are also feasts of local produce.
Pop into the Alderney Wildlife Trust office a few doors down and book onto bat walks or blond hedgehog hunts.
While diminutive in size, Alderney has a whole host of attractions, including Mannez Lighthouse, the Roman Fort and Water Mill.
By plane: direct flights are only from Southampton and take 40 minutes. Indirect regional flights go via Guernsey. The hotel is a 5-minute drive from the airport. skyscanner.net
