WHAT WE LOVE...

Set in 10 acres of lawned grounds a few miles from Bath, this privately-owned, mid-sized Georgian and Victorian country house hotel was recently given a complete facelift. It now has an arty and quite trendy feel. Public areas are livened up with collections of quirky artefacts, and bedrooms, some in the main building, others in a new annexe conversion, are all individually decorated - the best have private outdoor hot tubs. The restaurant has wide-ranging, crowd-pleasing menus, and a big outdoor terrace is set up for al fresco drinking and eating all year. A spa, whose facilities include an outdoor swimming pool heated year round, is another selling point. The hotel works well for couples, families and guests with dogs.

THE DETAILS

THE LOCATION

Set back from the bustling A36, the hotel enjoys a visual shield of trees, although traffic noise can still be heard. Behind the property, open fields stretch out, offering delightful views across the Avon Valley. Just a mile away is Freshford, one of the most picturesque villages in the region, which serves as a lovely starting point for scenic riverside walks.

Six miles south of Bath, about a 15-minute drive, depending on traffic.

By car: the hotel is 2 hours 40 mins from London, 2 hours from Birmingham and 1 hour 40 mins from Southampton. There is free parking on-site.

By train: London Paddington to Bath Spa takes 1 hour 20 mins. After that either take a 15-minute taxi to the hotel, or a 20-minute connection to Freshford then a 5-minute taxi. Book trains to Bath Spa.
