WHAT WE LOVE...

Set in 10 acres of lawned grounds a few miles from Bath, this privately-owned, mid-sized Georgian and Victorian country house hotel was recently given a complete facelift. It now has an arty and quite trendy feel. Public areas are livened up with collections of quirky artefacts, and bedrooms, some in the main building, others in a new annexe conversion, are all individually decorated - the best have private outdoor hot tubs. The restaurant has wide-ranging, crowd-pleasing menus, and a big outdoor terrace is set up for al fresco drinking and eating all year. A spa, whose facilities include an outdoor swimming pool heated year round, is another selling point. The hotel works well for couples, families and guests with dogs.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love the best of both worlds location - in the countryside but a short drive to all that the gorgeous city of Bath offers.

Homewood Hotel is surrounded by 10 acres of private gardens in scenic countryside 5 miles outside Bath.
By car: the hotel is 2 hours 40 mins from London, 2 hours from Birmingham and 1 hour 40 mins from Southampton. There is free parking on-site.
By train: London Paddington to Bath Spa takes 1 hour 20 mins. After that either take a 15-minute taxi to the hotel, or a 20-minute connection to Freshford then a 5-minute taxi. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

Couples and families come here for the space and comfort of a country house hotel, but one with a modern and laidback feel. Nose around and you'll come across all sorts of interesting things - maybe framed stuffed birds, portraits of Hollywood icons, and tapestries showing country life.

Service & Facilities

The good-sized outdoor swimming pool is heated year round, so you can have a pleasant dip even in the depths of winter. Well-behaved dogs are allowed in some bedrooms and most public areas. You can pre-order a Woof Box of canine goodies, and the dog menu includes 'pupcorn'.

Rooms

Our favourite rooms are the ones with their own outdoor hot tub - the rustic hot tub suite by the main house has a massive private terrace. We also love the 10 rooms in Mallingford Mews, the new annexe conversion, with historic wallpaper designs and grey-and-white marble bathrooms with underfloor heating.

Elegant, Marvellous, Junior Suite, Hot Tub Suite, Mallingford Mews
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom, 100 Acres Apothecary toiletries, Hypnos mattress, Smeg coffee machine, homemade biscuits, TV, Dyson hairdryer, dressing table, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

We love the terrace, which in summer has an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven, and in winter heated 'dining domes' for groups of up to six. Our favourite dish is the Sunday lunch sharing board, which includes local roast beef and pork loin and a mushroom and butternut squash nut roast.

Olio: Mediterranean dishes, local produce, small plates, pizzas, outdoor terrace. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Mains from £18.
Valentine's Bar: cocktails, draught and bottled beers, premium spirits, fine wines. Open every day noon-11pm.
