WHAT WE LOVE...

Occupying a grand heritage building on a leafy 18th-century square, the Berkeley's façade could be a backdrop for the Netflix series Bridgerton. The interiors, however, are low on period, high on drama: exposed brickwork and street art-style pictures, feathered light-fittings and dashes of velvet. Squarely aimed at those drawn to Bristol's boisterous nightlife, it's a mere hop-skip to Park Street's bars - but there's also a private members' club in the basement.

Style & Character

Those planning on making the most of Bristol won't mind the hotel's slightly squiffy looks - and appreciate a decadent backdrop when returning for a night cap. A highlight is the outdoor terrace, its entrance hidden through the downstairs bar, which feels like a secret garden - all jewel colours and twinkling lights.

Service & Facilities

Guests can make use of discounted day passes at the nearby Nuffield Health Club, which has a pool, sauna and steam room. The hotel has several pet-friendly rooms complete with bowls, treats and blankets, and occasionally offers 'Pets Go Free' promotions.

Rooms

The sense of space in the high-ceilinged Berkeley Suites is uplifting - and each has a tiny kitchenette housed in a discrete cupboard. The suites' Vi-Spring beds are exceptionally comfortable, with beautifully soft white linens. Fresh milk is provided for morning teas - always appreciated.

Single, Club Double, Club King, Double, Lower Deck Double rooms
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom, Elemis toiletries, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making facilities

Food & Drink

The window tables in the dining room are a prime place to sit and watch over the leafy square with a cup of coffee. Our favourite dish is Eggs Sardou, a breakfast first for us - two poached eggs on toasted muffins with wilted spinach, artichokes, hollandaise and Tabasco.

Square Kitchen: fine dining, modern British cuisine. Open 12-2.30pm/ 5.30-9pm Mon-Fri, 11.30am-3.30pm Sunday. Plates from £5.
