Boutique Hotel San Roque, Garachico, Tenerife
East of Garachico in the north west of Tenerife lies Icod de los Vinos. There's an important archaeological site here, the Cave of the Guanches, who were Berber-descending natives that occupied the island before the 15th-century Castilian conquest. Near neighbour Garachico has a dramatic history of its very own, with an early 18th-century volcanic eruption wreaking havoc on the then prominent port. One of the buildings that came after was the family home of the descendents of Garachico founder, Cristóbal de Ponte - a Genoa banker. A four-year restoration project by current owners transformed the residence into one of Tenerife's leading boutique hotels. What was once a renowned estate is now a gateway to Ferdinand and Isabella's Spain.
Local restaurant El Sargo Carbon's tasting menu is accompanied by rock 'n roll and feels more beach shack than á-la-carte restaurant.
This restored mansion house is in central Garachico, with the town's restaurants, bars and other attractions within walking distance.
By plane: flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester to Tenerife take around 4 hours 30 mins. The hotel is an hour's drive from Tenerife South airport. skyscanner.net
