Guernsey's only five-star hotel, this grand dame presides over the capital St Peter Port from her perch at the top of a hill. Full of history and charm, the hotel began life as a merchant's house in the early 1700s before being taken over by the Guernsey government to become the home of the Lieutenant-Governor from 1796 to 1842, which gave the hotel its name. Inside, some of the grandeur remains, including the vaulted Regency room, which is lit by crystal chandeliers. Elsewhere there are plenty of interesting antiques and objet d'art with striking green upholstery in the French-themed brasserie and a deep magenta banquettes in the Curry room. Facilities include a small spa with a gym and outside is a tranquil garden with an outdoor pool.
