WHAT WE LOVE...

Once upon a time, Alderley Edge was a prosperous but low-key village, probably best known to non-locals as the setting for Alan Garner's classic novel, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen. Then the Beckhams moved in in 1990 and everything changed. Today, the village name conjures instant images of Real Housewives and footballers, and the main road is lined with trendy bars, restaurants and beauty salons. Close to the action, the Alderley Edge Hotel began life as one of the many grand villas built here by wealthy Victorian merchants in the 19th century. Now, several extensions later, it's a popular four-star base, equally well placed for enjoying the local nightlife or visiting the beautiful sandstone ridge (the Edge) that gave the village its name.

THE DETAILS

By car: London is 4 hours' drive away, Machester is 45 minutes away. There is free private parking at the hotel.
By train: Alderley Edge station is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, with direct links to Manchester and Crewe. thetrainline.com
