WHAT WE LOVED...

Chester isn't a huge city so the DoubleTree by Hilton's edge-of-town location is no problem - in fact, many would look on it as a positive. It's easy to nip in and out of the centre from here, there's lots of free on-site parking, and road links right on the doorstep make it handy for visiting Chester Zoo or exploring further afield. Don't be misled by publicity shots into thinking you'll be staying in an historic mansion. The old hall is certainly there but now much outgrown by newer extensions on either side. There are advantages to that, though. Bedrooms might lack period character but they're a good size and equipped with modern bathrooms, and one wing of the hotel contains a huge modern spa - just what we're into.

THE DETAILS...

Location

We love the charming approach to the hotel - a short drive curving round a lawned area, ornamental pond and fountain.

The DoubleTree is located outside of the city centre, close to the Hoole roundabout.
By car: 4-hour (200-mile) drive from London or 1 hour (40 miles) from Manchester. Parking is available on site.
By train: Chester Station, with connecting links to London and Manchester, is a 10-minute taxi ride away. trainline.com

Style & Character

The hotel is popular with couples, spa-goers and even wedding parties. There's a beautiful 19th-century conservatory, now used for private functions. The old stable block, too, has become an attractive event venue.

Service & Facilities

The DoubleTree tradition of handing out a warm chocolate chip cookie to each guest at check-in is always a nice touch.

Rooms

Rooms themselves don't differ hugely but some have better views - ask for one overlooking the walled garden. In Deluxe rooms and Suites, we love the dividing unit between the bed and seating area, containing a nifty TV that swivels to face either way.

Food & drink

Next to the restaurant is the restored walled garden, a pleasant place to sit out with drinks on a summer evening. There's a decent choice on the breakfast buffet, including cold meats, smoothies, yoghurts and fruit salad, plus a selection of hot dishes.

Garden Room and Terrace: bright, open space; all-day dining, British ingredients. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains from £12.
