WHAT WE LOVE...

If you love Cornwall but not the crowds then Budock Vean is for you. Hidden away in 65 acres of grounds on the banks of the Helford River and equipped with a golf course, tennis courts and spa, this is a peaceful and relaxing sanctuary. The gardens are a standout - as good as some you can pay to visit in the area. A magical valley crammed with subtropical plants leads down to the picturesque Helford River. Don't miss the chance to explore the river with a local guide in the hotel's boat, or on a kayak trip. Walkers will be delighted to find you can pick up the South West Coast Path from the bottom of the garden.

The hotel is popular with golfers but suits anyone looking for a quiet getaway. The extensive grounds mean you can always find a quiet spot and the hotel is unlikely to feel busy.

We loved the boat trip along the river in the hotel's boat with knowledgeable guide Roger, who shared local history and stories along the way.

Rooms

Our room had views of the garden and there is plenty of room for families with a second fold-down bed. Little touches in the room like pool towels and dressing gowns make trips to the pool and spa easy.

Standard Room, Signature Room, Suite
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities, TV, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

Decadent cream teas in the conservatory with beautiful views of the garden are a must. Remember, you're in Cornwall so it's jam first! When you're so close to the sea you have to try the locally caught fish; we had the pan-fried Cornish turbot.

Restaurant: modern British cuisine, seasonal menus. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Four-course menu from £51.
Afternoon tea: served daily in the cocktail bar, conservatory or terrace, 3-5pm.
