Hotel Kompas, Dubrovnik, Croatia
In a commanding position on Lapad Bay's Sunset Beach, Hotel Kompas is a sleek, sophisticated study in contemporary minimalism. Only a small part of the original 1967 façade remains, as the hotel was transformed in 2015 into something much smarter. Built into the hillside overlooking the beach, north of Dubrovnik's Old Town, the glass-fronted hotel is full of light and airiness and offers marvellous views of the sea - best enjoyed from its huge first-floor terrace, outdoor swimming pool and spa. The ground level is taken up by a restaurant, terrace and lounge bar, with the terrace spilling out towards the water's edge. Fancy a swim in the sea? Flop on one of the sunbeds set aside for guests on Sunset Beach.
Your expert reviewer
We enjoyed joining the promenaders along the wide stone footpath to the west, past rocky beaches and watching the sun go down.
Located in Lapad Bay, the beach is a short stroll away. It's a 15-minute bus ride to Dubrovnik's Old Town with its fortified walls and fortresses.
By plane: direct flights from London to Dubrovnik take 2 hours 30 minutes. The hotel is a 35-minute drive from the airport. Free parking available. skyscanner.net
Style & Character
The hotel's extensive conference rooms attract business people, and holidaymakers come for the pool, spa, beach, dining and relaxed atmosphere. The top-floor Zenith Bar has Adriatic views as gorgeous as the décor, with giant hanging lamps, curvy chairs and low white sofas.

Feel your muscles relax while sitting in the steam room and Finnish sauna, after a quick workout in the gym.

Rooms on the western side catch the sunset, but you get wider views of the sea from the front-facing rooms. We loved the unobstructed views of the Adriatic through the balcony's glass balustrade, and lighting that was innovative and not run-of-the-mill bland.

Go for drinks at the gorgeous Zenith Bar, then a candlelit dinner on Sphere's terrace on a balmy summer night. The shrimp risotto in Sphere was delicious - wonderfully creamy rice with perfectly cooked plump prawns.
