WHAT WE LOVE...

One for golf-lovers and active types, this hotel has an impressive range of facilities. Highbullen sits within 127 acres and boasts an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, two pools, sauna, steam room and gym. Fishing on the River Mole and shooting are can also be arranged. The former manor house provides spacious, atmospheric ensuite rooms with high ceilings, many with lovely countryside views. But if self-catering is more your thing the hotel offers that too in converted outbuildings. There are two restaurants, one fine dining and the other more informal. Rural mid-Devon isn't the part of the county most people come to see, but Exmoor and the North Devon coast are worthwhile day trips.

THE DETAILS

Location

The remote location may deter some guests with children, but we love walking in Exmoor National Park, admiring its wild landscape and enjoying memorable encounters with the pretty ponies.

Located in rural mid-Devon, you can drive to Exmoor in 30 minutes, and Dartmoor and the coast in an hour.
By car: around 4 hours 20 mins from London, and 2 hours 30 mins from Bath and Salisbury. Free private parking on-site.

Food & Drink

We loved the slow roasted rump of Exmoor lamb with fondant potato, heritage carrots, spring vegetables and jus. A separate vegetarian menu in Devon View means there is more choice than in a lot of restaurants.

Devon View: fine dining, traditonal British dishes. Mains include pan-fried turbot and roasted rack of Exmoor lamb. Open daily for breakfast and dinner.
The Cellars: bistro menu, pasta, pizza, steak, fish and chips.
