WHAT WE LOVE...

Opened in 2013, Generator Berlin Mitte is one of the older properties in this pioneering collection of urban hostels that are now sprinkled across Europe and the USA. It appeals to a wide range of travellers from euro-pinching backpackers to a gang of girlfriends off clubbing along with sightseeing couples and families. Both staff and guests are international and the mood easygoing ('I'd love to but no' quips the do not disturb sign). You can choose between shared dormitories and private rooms and both come in a cheerful and comfortable no frills style. As with budget airlines expect to pay for extras, such as luggage storage or a 1pm check-out, but once everything's sorted you're in the heart of the city with plenty of good times ahead.

THE DETAILS

Location

There's plenty to discover if you just go for a wander, such as the unexpectedly hip boutiques on Linienstrasse.

Mitte is home to all the sights, including the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag Dome. Shopping district Alexanderplatz is nearby.
By plane: direct flights to Berlin Brandenburg from London (1 hour 40 minutes), Manchester (1 hour 55 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 5 minutes). It's a 40-minute drive to the hotel. skyscanner.net
