Hotel du Vin Winchester, Hampshire
The very first property in the Hotel du Vin chain, this red-brick townhouse hotel epitomises all that is good about this witty, wine-loving brand. Situated just a stone's throw from the High Street, it nevertheless provides sanctuary with a pretty walled courtyard garden and even it's own small car park. Enjoy large period rooms with sumptuous styling and L'Occitane toiletries, Nespresso machines and soft fluffy robes. Sip an al fresco aperitif surrounded by fairy lights before dining in Gallic style with bowls of French onion soup or moules frites in the bistro. If you can tear yourself away, then the Gurkha museum, the Great Hall with an Arthurian round table, and Winchester Cathedral are all within walking distance of the hotel.
This central location is perfect for popping back for a coffee while exploring the city.
Just off the main Winchester high street, the hotel is peaceful and within easy walking distance from the city's shops, museums and other attractions.
By car: around 2 hours from London. Just over half an hour from Southampton. There is free parking at the hotel.
By train: Direct trains from London Waterloo take about 1 hour 15 minutes. From Southampton, about 15 minutes. The hotel is a 10-minute walk or five-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com
