WHAT WE LOVE...

If you'd rather wake up to the sound of church bells and ducks than the noise of the city, this historic riverside hotel is perfect for you. It's been owned by royalty and the church over the years, before transforming into a hotel. Most of the building dates from the 18th century, but parts of a 15th-century manor house and barn are still visible, and there's a gym, pool and spa, as well as landscaped gardens, river trails and a pretty village to explore.

THE DETAILS

Location

Voco Oxford Thames offers the peace of a country retreat, and we love the views of geese, swans and herons by the river, while knowing we're still just a short hop from the city and all the sights.

Surrounded by parkland and overlooking the river, Voco Oxford Thames is 15 minutes from the city centre, in the pretty village of Sandford.
By car: the hotel is around 60 miles from London (1.5 hours), 85 miles from Bristol and Birmingham (1.5 hours) and 180 miles from Manchester (4 hours). Parking is available.
By rail: London Paddington and London Marylebone to Oxford central station takes around one hour, Birmingham to Oxford central station is just over an hour. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

The village setting is wonderful; great for families, dog owners or anyone favouring peace and quiet over city hustle. Expect warm Cotswold stone and giant wooden beams paired with modern furnishings, and lights in the narrow window niches in the lobby are a nice touch, highlighting the craftsmanship of the past.

Service & Facilities

We love the long history of the site, from its Roman potteries, connections to the Knights Templar and life as a working farm.

Food & Drink

The Crusaders Bar is set in what looks like a medieval hall, but with funky touches, including crushed velvets, mood lighting and modern art on the walls. The food there is good, with burgers served in a charcoal brioche bun and an impressive choice of sharing platters.

Crusaders Bar: Pub food, relaxed atmosphere, lounge bar. Mains from £6.95-£15.95. Open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.
The Conservatory: Seasonal menu, British inspired, local produce. Mains from £16.95-£23.95. Open for dinner.
