WHAT WE LOVE...

A gorgeous five-star in the upmarket and quiet Ballsbridge neighbourhood, a tree-lined suburb south of Dublin city and a popular location with embassies. The hotel looks modern from the outside but has a historic-hotel vibe on the inside, with lots of wood, chandeliers, antique-style furniture and plush carpets. Rooms and bathrooms are huge and really well equipped - the Italian marble bathrooms have huge bathtubs. The hotel also has a spa, a 14m pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, plus a well-equipped gym and a small garden terrace. It's not cheap to eat, drink or even park here, but the hotel regularly has special offer packages which include a three-course meal.

THE DETAILS

Location

We loved all the trees in the area and how the hotel is away from the buzz, din and traffic of the city centre.

Herbert Park is a five-minute walk away, while the sights of Dublin city centre are a 10-minute drive.
By plane: direct flights to Dublin from Manchester and Birmingham (1 hour), and London (1 hour 15 minutes). It's a 25-minute drive to the hotel. Parking costs €15 per day. skyscanner.net

Style & Character

The hotel suits people who like all the five-star treatment and luxuries. Rooms are simple and peaceful in design but there's a sense of luxury and opulence around all of the common/public areas. There are lots of lovely areas in the hotel for afternoon tea or a drink - the garden terrace or the Reading Room in particular.

Service & Facilities

The service in every area was flawless. Even for such a large hotel, it felt personal and the welcome felt genuine.

Food & Drink

It's not all high-end five-star dining; there's a casual mix, so you can have a burger or fish and chips, or a loin of venison. The breakfast buffet has a great selection of cereals and hot food, and the bakery section has extras like banana bread and delicious scones as well as the usual croissants and danishes.

Seasons Restaurant: elegant 2 AA-Rosette restaurant, local produce, seasonal menus. Open daily for breakfast, Fri-Sat for dinner. Evening set menu from €60.
Lobby Lounge: comfy sofas, all-day menu, open daily. Afternoon tea served 12-2:30pm, from €58.
