The Lungarno Hotel, Florence, Italy
A stylish boutique hotel on the south bank of the River Arno with views of the Ponte Vecchio from its rooms and restaurants. The Michelin-starred Borgo San Jacopo is a destination in itself, with a reputation for excellent fine-dining Italian cuisine, and there's also a more informal bistro for cocktails and relaxed dining. The first property in the Ferragamo family's hotel group, the Lungarno Collection, it remains its flagship and has recently been elevated to five-star status. The art collection that adorns the walls of the public rooms and corridors includes sketches by Cocteau and Picasso and it's worth a meander through the different floors to see what you might spot.
Despite being so close to the major sites, the neighbourhood on this side of the river feels much more local than the touristy north side.
The hotel is beside the Ponte Vecchio on the south bank of the Arno, a short walk from the Uffizi and Palazzo Vecchio.
By plane: direct flights to Pisa from London, Manchester and Bristol take around 2 hours 30 mins. The hotel is a 1 hour 10-minute drive from the airport. Private parking costs €35 per day. skyscanner.net
