If your budget doesn't quite stretch to five star, this plush four-star hotel may do the trick. Located in the heart of the Velabro neighbourhood, it is pretty central and near a number of key sights but pleasingly away from the tourist hordes. There are a number of bedroom categories, all supremely comfortable, and you can enjoy a game of snooker in the billiards room, a movie in the screening room, or soak up the impressive views from the rooftop restaurant. There's also an outdoor courtyard lounge and a tea room, and if you've had a too-lazy, indulgent day, there's a gym with Technogym equipment and a Turkish steam bath at your disposal.

Though near lots of key sights, the hotel is set away from the tourist crowds.

You're within walking distance of the Pantheon, Roman Forum and Colosseum. Cross the River Tiber for a longer stroll to Vatican City.
By plane: direct flights to Rome Leonardo da Vinci from London (2 hours 25 minutes) or Manchester (2 hours 40 minutes). The hotel is a 35-minute drive from the airport. skyscanner.net
