WHAT WE LOVE...

One of Rome's oldest luxury hotels, the Hassler has held its coveted position at the top of the Spanish steps since it first opened its doors in 1893. Having been in the same family since the 1920s, you get all the professionalism of a top five-star hotel, with the friendly welcome of a luxury private villa. The Michelin-starred Imago restaurant on the sixth floor serves food as breathtaking as the views over the Eternal City, while the 7th Floor Terrace is a great spot for an al fresco lunch with the same bistrot menu that's available in the Belle Epoque Salone Eva drawing room downstairs or the outdoor Palm Court. The third-floor spa offers treatments with the Hassler's own range of Amorvero products.

THE DETAILS

Location

The four-mile wide Villa Borghese gardens are a great pleasure park with large tree-lined avenues and the art-filled Galleria Borghese.

The hotel is right in the centre of Rome. Villa Borghese and its fabulous grounds are a 10-minute walk away.
By plane: there are direct flights to Rome's Leonardo da Vinci International Airport from London (2 hours 25 mins), Manchester (3 hours 5 mins) and Bristol (4 hours 45 mins). The hotel is a 40-minute drive from the airport. skyscanner.net

Style & Character

A hotel like this is for the creme-de-la-creme. One of our favourite features is the bronze Capitoline she-wolf in reception, which was displayed at the original Hotel Hassler in Naples until 1918.

Service & Facilities

Mario comes every evening at 7.30pm to play tunes on the piano in Salone Eva - a special experience.

Our favourite is Room 610, which is the Presidential Suite and has wood-panelled walls and ceiling, Japanese lacquered cupboards, an antique walnut desk, telescope and mirrored dining table. Nearly every room in the hotel has a separate bath and shower.
