The Z Hotel, Holborn, London
WHAT WE LOVE...
With 197 rooms, this is the largest London hotel of the Z chain of affordable luxury hotels. Set in a neoclassical building just a short stroll from Holborn tube, rooms start at £55 for an inside cabin-style room with no window, but you can opt for a larger queen or king room with natural light and more space. Whatever the size, all rooms have air conditioning, Sky TV, tea, coffee and water and basic bathroom products. The hotel itself is situated along busy Kingsway, but you don't get bothered by traffic noise as most of the rooms are on the back or in the middle of the building. There are plans for a full-service brasserie but at present you can enjoy an all-day dining menu, affordable drinks and a simple breakfast.

You are on the doorstep of theatreland here, and the Royal Opera House just a seven-minute walk away.
A prime central London location - you're within walking distance of Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. Big Ben and Buckingham Palace are a 30-minute walk away.
By car: 4 hours from Manchester and less than 3 hours from Bristol.
By train: Holborn tube station is 2 minutes' walk away; London Euston is a 10-minute taxi ride. thetrainline.com

Ideal for young international city-breakers looking for affordable luxury. The café serves as a co-working/hang-out space with no pressure to buy drinks.

Facilities are limited, but somebody made a fresh pot of coffee for me at 4pm (and unlimited filter coffee is only £2).

Room 522 is a king room with a large window and plenty of space. The TV has access to Sky and there's air conditioning, tea and coffee, and bottled water.

Food & Drink
The limited bar menu is very good value. The triple rasher bacon roll was small but delicious in a brioche bun.
Z Café: relaxed dining room and late-night bar. All-day menu, open daily. Dishes include sandwiches, salads and pizzas. Breakfast served until 11am.
