The Standard, King's Cross, London
Everything but standard, The Standard is a hip hotel with stylish 1970s-style interiors - think retro furnishings, bold pops of colour and dim lighting. It's housed in a Brutalist building opposite King's Cross St Pancras station, with a capsule lift that takes guests up to a swanky rooftop terrace. The fashionable yet decidedly unpretentious vibe attracts millennials seeking a cool London pad where they can unwind and feel at home in north London's revamped King's Cross area (its days as a derelict neighbourhood are behind; it's now a creative hub with cool shops, trendy bars and hipsters in skinny jeans strolling to the offices of tech giants). Head up to tenth-floor Sweeties to sip cocktails as you gaze at the London skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows, or sit back and relax at Decimo, the hotel's sophisticated restaurant where Spanish and Mexican flavours combine (tortillas, pork ribs and the like, along with potent margaritas).
You're a skip and a hop away from King's Cross St Pancras station, with scores of buzzing restaurants, bars and shops at your fingertips.
Conveniently located beside great transport links, providing easy access to the rest of the city. The British Museum is a 20-minute walk away.
By car: around 4 hours from Manchester and less than 3 hours from Bristol. Parking costs £20 per day.
By train: King's Cross St Pancras station is 2 minutes' walk away; Oxford Circus tube is a 7-minute walk. thetrainline.com

The young members of staff are all utterly charming - from the restaurant waiters to the receptionists. Pooches are welcome, with bowls and beds provided. The closest large green space to take your pup for a walk is Regent's Park, which lies a 15-minute drive west.
