Bermonds Locke, Tower Bridge, London
At the funkier end of Bermondsey Street, right on Tower Bridge Road, the burgeoning Locke chain of suite hotels turns the cool urban bolthole schtick up to 11 in their South London branch, with a lobby full of twenty-somethings beavering away on laptops, a cool courtyard with artisan furniture and hammocks, and unisex toilets where the music pumps at party levels all times of day. Old fashioned and fusty, it is not. Indeed this 143-room apartment-hotel epitomises the 'Locke Living' group's vision of providing cool, affordable urban accommodation for those who often want to stay a bit longer, and offering all the amenities you need, to do so, including kitchen facilities, discounts for stays of a week or more, and even a lobby that doubles as a co-working space!
In summer, the hotel restaurant's tables spread out into the adjacent courtyard, where a Planet Organic supermarket makes it impossible not to eat healthily while you're here.
The hotel is just south of the river and within walking distance of Borough Market and The Shard.
By car: the hotel is 4.5 hours from Manchester and 3 hours from Bristol. Parking costs £35 per day.
By train: Borough and London Bridge tube stations are 15 minutes' walk away; Liverpool Street is a 20-minute taxi ride. thetrainline.com
