WHAT WE LOVE...
Each citizenM hotel has a theme, and the one here is LGBTQ - shown through the rainbow range of colours and by the choice of some of the artworks and books. The lounge areas are especially inviting, with groups of sofas, armchairs and coffee tables, as well as restaurant tables under little silver pendant lights. They lead off two event rooms with big circular tables that would make any work meeting sing. There are lots of little touches stamping the citizenM personality; for example the corridors don't have any old carpet, but a striking black and bright red carpet that has an aerial view of Amsterdam. There are also numerous attempts to get you in the citizenM frame of mind such as the slogan on the lift, "citizenM says… get together" and the do not disturb sign, "Don't come in, there's someone naked here". This sort of thing could annoy some guests, but with everything else so impressive, you hardly notice.

There's a great bakery and cafés just by the hotel.
Located just off the Amstel River, it's a four-minute walk to the canal ring, with Rembrandt's House and Oosterpark also a short stroll away.
By plane: direct flights from London and Manchester take around 1 hour 15 minutes. The hotel is a 20-minute drive from Schiphol airport and a 15-minute drive from central station. skyscanner.net
Style & Character
This hotel is clearly geared towards guests in their 20s to 40s, although older ones would no doubt love its vitality too. There's a fabulous collection of art, fashion and design books in the lounge area.

Rooms
Rooms are very similar, and you can't go wrong whichever one you're given. The design of the rooms is so good - they're compact but bright and uplifting, and every centimetre is used to best effect.

Food & Drink
For breakfast, a beautiful little egg concoction was presented in its own tiny casserole dish. The pork belly in the tonkotsu ramen melts in your mouth; it's accompanied by edamame beans, seaweed and bamboo shoots.
canteenM: informal restaurant, bar and lounge. Open daily, 24-hour. Breakfast available, 6-11am. Serving snacks, light bites and large plates.
