WHAT WE LOVE...

This small boutique hotel housed in three canalside buildings dating from 1652 strongly follows the theme of the craftsman. Bedrooms are each named and themed after a different craft, such as The Boat Builder, The Clockmaker, The Woodworker, The Blacksmith, The Bookbinder, The Cartographer. There are numerous historical features, for example the wooden floor in the breakfast room dates from 1652 and when the hotel was being renovated it was taken away and had to be replaced painstakingly, piece by piece. There are candles, antique mirrors, carpenter's tables, an antique silver motorised canoe, a vintage motorbike, and a model of the hotel in a cabinet by the lobby. It first became a hotel at the end of the 19th century, and its history has been portrayed on a painting across the hotel's staircase.

THE DETAILS

Location

The hotel looks out onto Singel canal and lots of historic canal houses, and you really feel that you are living in the heart of Amsterdam.

Located in the city centre, you're a short walk from sights including Anne Frank's House, Oude Kerk and the Royal Palace.
By plane: direct flights from London and Manchester take around 1 hour 15 minutes. The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Schiphol airport and a 10-minute walk from central station. skyscanner.net

Style & Character

This hotel would most appeal to middle-aged and older guests who appreciate staying in an historical building. It's great that so many items in the hotel are relevant to its craftsperson theme and have been cleverly upcycled.

Service & Facilities

Impressively, the hotel retains so many historic features yet remains very comfortable.

  • Café
  • In-room breakfast
  • Family-friendly
  • Free Wi-Fi

Rooms

The Miller (The Lofts) has great views of the canal below. It has two 1950s oak chairs, bedside tables made from millstones, a huge wooden chest and an old mill wheel hanging from the ceiling amongst the wooden beams. We loved the endless quirky historical features.

Room, Room with a View, Deluxe Room with a View, Family Room, Signature Room, The Lofts
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, Nespresso machine, free bottled water, TV, free Wi-Fi

Food & Drink

Delicious poffertjes (small Dutch pancakes) are served at breakfast. We loved the chicken fillet sandwich with apple tzatziki, caramelised garlic and avocado.
