Bartley Lodge, Cadnam, New Forest
Sink into sumptuous Chesterfield sofas in the beautifully panelled lounge at this three-star country house hotel, once the home of geologist Charles Lyell, a friend of Charles Darwin. A huge terrace, which extends the length of the house and overlooks the gardens, is perfect for drinks al fresco in summer. An attractive orangery is ideal for dinner a deux. The food is excellent and eclectic dishes such as a deconstructed Hob Nob dessert are creatively produced. There are eight acres of grounds for dogs and children to romp around in and explore, and an indoor heated swimming pool for family frolics and fun. The 40 bedrooms come in all shapes and sizes, the decor inspired by the forest and nature outside.
We love the grounds and gardens which are extremely peaceful and relaxing - just the ticket for a weekend away.
Bartley Lodge is located just off the A31/M27 junction a short stroll from the pictureque village of Cadnam.
By car: the hotel is around 2 hours from London and Bristol and 4 hours from Sheffield. Free parking is available on-site.
By train: London Waterloo to Southampton Airport Parkway takes just over an hour. The hotel is a 15-minute drive from the station. thetrainline.com
