WHAT WE LOVE...
England's most northerly hotel, less than a mile from the Scottish border and overlooking the North Sea, is a gem of a Georgian country house. Just off the A1, though hidden in parkland, it offers all you need for a relaxing break if you aren't bothered about fancy spas and swimming pools but do enjoy good food, smart but friendly service and breezy coastal walks. Interiors are bold and bright rather than country-house fussy with fresh and light bedrooms that still retain their architectural elegance; some have hot tubs including a handful of 'garden pods' discreetly tucked under trees. Berwick-upon-Tweed, with its walls and Georgian architecture, is a five-minute drive, or there are quiet villages and country houses to explore along the River Tweed.

Location
Just south of Berwick are two of Northumberland's finest beaches, Cocklawburn and Cheswick; runway-flat sands where you'd be unlucky to meet more than a dozen other people.
Exceptionally close to the Scottish border, you could follow the coastal path or travel south and visit Berwick Castle.
By car: around 1 hour from Edinburgh, 1 hour 20 minutes from Newcastle and 4 hours from Manchester. Free parking available.
By train: there are direct trains from Edinburgh (50 minutes) and London King's Cross (3 hours 45 minutes) to Berwick-upon-Tweed. The hotel is a seven-minute drive. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
With its range of bedroom types - from pod-like cabins to romantic suites with hot tubs - plus choice of restaurant or bar snacks, this is a country-house escape that appeals to most budgets. We loved the fact it was two minutes from the busy A1, but in its own relaxed world of quiet parkland, sea views and smart-but-not-stuffy surrounds.
Service & Facilities
The long, sheltered terrace faces west and is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink. Dogs are made very welcome with a bed, bowl and treats in the bedroom (most room types accept dogs), and are allowed in most public areas as well as in the grounds.

Rooms
Several wood-clad 'garden pods', with hot tubs, are set apart from the hotel tucked amongst trees, but we also liked the large rooms in the stable block with hot tubs in private gardens. Bathrooms are large and boldly tiled with big walk-in showers.

Food & Drink
The split-level dining room cleverly makes the large, high-ceilinged room more intimate. Breakfast is a delight with a choice of cooked-to-order dishes such as local kippers, eggs Benedict and avocado with poached eggs, as well as the full English including local sausage, black pudding and haggis.
Restaurant 1782: seasonal menus, locally sourced produce. Open daily for dinner, mains from £18.
The Drawing Room: open daily for lunch (12-5pm) or bar snacks (12-10pm). Small plates, 3 for £12.
