The Cavendish Hotel, Baslow, Peak District
Few Peak District experiences are as relaxing as sitting on the terrace at the Cavendish Hotel, gazing out across fields of caramel-coloured cows towards the parkland of Chatsworth, with the top of its hunting tower just about visible above the trees. The hotel is actually part of the Chatsworth estate and as a base for visiting the hall and grounds it takes some beating, but it's also well-placed for exploring the Dark Peak - the wilder moorlands that curve round the northern edge of the National Park. Suitably updated from its old coaching inn origins, the Cavendish is just what you want from a modern country house hotel, elegant but unstuffy, with extremely comfortable bedrooms, two restaurants serving delicious food, and a pleasantly relaxing atmosphere.
We love spotting herds of deer in the parkland around Chatsworth and visiting the pretty village of Edensor, home to a very chic little tearoom.
The hotel is on the edge of the Chatsworth Estate, with the upmarket shops and restaurants of Baslow nearby.
By car: the hotel is 35 mins from Sheffield, 1 hour 30 mins from Birmingham and 3 hours 30 mins from London. There is free parking on-site.
By train: London St Pancras to Chesterfield takes 1 hour 45 mins. The hotel is a 20-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
As well as being an ideal base for Chatsworth visits, it's also popular with romantic weekenders and guests celebrating special birthdays and anniversaries. Look out for the 19th-century lithographic prints lining the corridor walls, depicting fascinating scenes from the Great Exhibition of 1851 at Crystal Palace.
