WHAT WE LOVE...

Reaching Losehilll House Hotel & Spa means navigating a lane so narrow you have to keep fingers crossed no one's going to come the other way. Once you get to the end, though, your slightly frazzled nerves are soothed by the sight of a pretty white-rendered Arts & Crafts building set against a lovely rural backdrop. It was always intended to host travellers, originally opening in 1914 as a hostel for ramblers, and it's still an ideal base for walking or cycling through the hills and valleys of the Peak District. These days, though, it caters just as well for people with no intention of ever lacing up a hiking boot: many guests come for the small spa, the two-AA Rosette restaurant, and the sheer peace of the surroundings.

THE DETAILS

Location

We love the dramatic scenery of Winnats Pass, where the road winds up (or down) through a cleft between high limestone ridges.

The hotel is surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Hope Valley, around 3 miles from the village of Castleton.
By car: the hotel is 40 mins from Sheffield, 2 hours from Birmingham and 3 hours 40 mins from London. There is free parking on-site.
By train: London St Pancras to Edale (via Sheffield) takes 2 hours 45 mins. The hotel is a 15-minute taxi ride from the station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

For the most part, guests are a mix of couples enjoying a country break and small groups of friends here on a spa package. The restaurant is a lovely, light space, with windows so large that no one misses out on the views over the surrounding countryside.

Service & Facilities

You can save money on visiting Chatsworth and Haddon Halls by buying tickets on reception here, where they're sold at a slight discount. Dogs are welcome in some of the ground-floor bedrooms and in the grounds but not in the hotel itself.

To make the most of the views across the garden to Win Hill, ask for an upstairs room at the back of the building. There's a little lift to take you up to the first-floor rooms if needed - handy if you're travelling with heavy luggage.

Food & Drink

A plate of canapes (olives and mini savoury scones topped with crème fraiche) came with the pre-dinner drinks - always a welcome touch. They do a fine breakfast fry-up, using tasty bacon, sausages, black pudding and free-range eggs from local suppliers, along with traditional Derbyshire oatcakes.

Grafene Restaurant: 2-AA Rosette fine dining, local produce, modern British cuisine. Open every day for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Four-course dinner £50, 7-course tasting menu £65.
