WHAT WE LOVE...

The location of the 74 room Hotel Teatro, built on the site of the old Baquet Theatre, is ideal for culture vultures. Within spitting distance of Avenida dos Aliados, the wonderful São Bento Train Station (a living piece of art, decorated floor to ceiling with azulejo tile work) and the Church of Saint Ildefonso, there isn't a better location for access to Porto's historic centre. The hotel blends nicely into this district. Its heavy copper doors lead into a long lobby and there is a nod to its theatrical past. Though contemporary in style the wood interior gives a natural and relaxing vibe - the first impressions are modern furnishings, soft up lighting and plants dotted about. On the ground floor is the excellent restaurant Il Basilico which opens out to the street - but bear in mind it serves mainly Italian cuisine as opposed to anything Portuguese with the exception of Pastel de Nata.

The Ravioli di Ricotta, Spinaci e Pinoli is excellent, and we love that you can sit at a table near the 'open to the air' entrance for as long as you like, lingering over a coffee and people-watching.

Il Basilico Bar: drinks, cocktails and snacks. Open daily 11am-11pm.
