WHAT WE LOVE...

Cross a rattling wooden-decked bridge and (very) short span of water and you are on the Isle of Eriska, looking across Loch Linnhe and a maze of small islands to the blue-green hills of Appin and Morvern. There you'll find 300 private acres of garden, grazing and coastline to explore, home to wildlife including deer, otters and badgers, and a high-Victorian Baronial mansion turned cooly contemporary hotel. Relax in the first-class spa, get active with a full range of sports and leisure activities or simply borrow a pair of wellies and go for a walk. However you spend your day, you'll return to good food in luxurious surroundings, well looked after by genuinely engaged and engaging staff.

THE DETAILS

Location

If you really want to push the boat out (literally), take the lobster fishing tour following the coast to Loch Linnhe taking in the Glenfinnan Viaduct (of Harry Potter fame) and wildly photogenic Castle Stalker. If you're lucky, you'll catch your dinner.

The hotel is on a small private island at the mouth of Loch Creran on the west coast of Scotland. It offers tours to Mull, including Duart Castle and Iona Abbey, as well as a photography tour of Glencoe.
By car: around 3 hours from Edinburgh, 6 hours from Manchester and 9 hours from London. There is free parking on site.
By train: trains run to Connel Ferry from Glasgow and take around 3 hours. The hotel is a 15-minute taxi ride from Connel Ferry station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

This hotel is perfect for couples - you can be as active, or as idle as you feel. Stay in a Hilltop Reserve for romantic seclusion or be sociable in the main hotel. A highlight is the racy art deco fireplace in the library which is also the bar - all those books are a further incentive to stay by the fire and have another drink.

Service & Facilities

Spend time with an endlessly patient instructor who will transform you from Huckleberry Finn to the Compleat Angler in a single afternoon. Dogs are welcome in all bedrooms but not in the public areas of the hotel.

Food & Drink

We love the porridge brûlée'd with whisky and cream-pudding for breakfast! Our favourite dish is lobster boudin with sea beets - perfect when looking at the loch where the lobster may have been caught and the sea beet harvested.

The Restaurant at Isle of Eriska: formal fine dining, modern British cuisine. Open daily for breakfast and dinner. Three-course menu £75pp.
Afternoon tea: full tea service. £30pp, £40pp with champagne. 24hr pre-booking required.
