WHAT WE LOVE...

It's all about the location at this characterful hotel set in 240 acres of lushly wooded grounds on the shores of Loch Awe. It's a 40-minute drive from Oban with 20 minutes of that down a single track road, but worth every second. The sense of seclusion is so strong you might never leave the hotel other than to explore the woods, spot wildlife, go boating on the loch or play a gentle round of croquet. Indoors expect chinoiserie and gold thrones, not tartan carpets and antlers. It's gently 'lived in' but with a dose of drama in the use of bold colours and the collection of antiques. You can also expect fine cooking and staff genuinely pleased to look after you.

THE DETAILS

Location

Standing by the loch gazing at the Milky Way, in a sky entirely without light pollution, is a very special experience.

By car: around 3 hours 30 mins from Edinburgh, 6 hours 30 mins from Sheffield and 9 hours from London. There is free parking on-site.

Style & Character

Ardanaiseig is perfect for lovers of antiques and places with character. If you're offended by a lived-in look, you've come to the wrong place. The oil portraits on the walls, which definitely re-pay close examination, are wonderful.

Rooms

At this unusual hotel, not only are no two rooms the same, neither are any two beds. The striking shade of green on the walls of 'Ichrachan' makes it like sleeping among larch trees in early spring.

Master Loch, Master Garden, Garden View rooms, Rose Cottage family/ group accomodation, Boatshed suite
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom, Arran Aromatics toilteries, TV, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities

Food & Drink

It's difficult to choose between the fabulous puddings - whether to have the chocolate fondant with blackcurrant sorbet, or the white chocolate and cardamom panna cotta with sweet orange jam. The Isle of Mull scallops with smoked preserved fennel are worth walking all of the 22 miles from Oban to Ardnaiseig for.

Restaurant: fine dining, modern Scottish cuisine, local ingredients. Open for breakfast lunch and dinner. Three course dinner £39pp.
