Hotel Review
Hill House, Bath
Formerly a pub, this end-of-terrace Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse is one of the most enjoyable bed and breakfasts in Bath. The extremely hospitable live-in owners have furnished the place with a pot pourri of art, antiques and quirky bric-à-brac. The five ensuite bedrooms have bags of comfort and character, and breakfasts, usually eaten with other guests round a single table, are outstanding, with fruit and veg from the owners' allotment, plenty of it homemade, and vegan options. A new development for Hill House is the possibility of catered whole house lets, with guests given access to an elegant, art-filled drawing room.

THE DETAILS
Location
The location - on a busy road, a short climb from the city centre - won't suit everyone, but it's ideal for discovering Bath's lesser visited Georgian crescents, such as lopsided Camden Crescent, just seconds away from the hotel.
Hill House is a 15-minute walk from the city centre and its attractions, like the famous Roman Baths.
By car: 45 minutes from Bristol, 2 hours 30 minutes from London, 3 hours 30 minutes from Manchester. Free parking is available nearby.
By train: there are direct services to Bath Spa from Bristol Temple Meads (11 minutes), Cardiff Central (1 hour 5 minutes) and London Paddington (1 hour 15 minutes). The hotel is an eight-minute taxi ride from Bath Spa station. thetrainline.com

Style & Character
Perfect for those who want a characterful, personally-run bed and breakfast near the centre of Bath, and are happy to socialise with strangers over breakfast. A nice touch is the bookcase full of well-thumbed books in the hallway, any of which you're very welcome to borrow.

Service & Facilities
Hill House offers some great extras - a complimentary parking permit for the city's central zone as well as fresh milk for tea or coffee and home-made biscuits in the bedrooms.

Rooms
Rooms come with all kinds of interesting features, from a chaise longue with a sheepskin rug to a cushion decorated with the owners' dog. Our favourite is Number Four, which has an old fireplace, swagged curtains, a pair of French armchairs and wooden panels daintily painted with birds.
Rooms One-Six
Facilities include: ensuite bathroom with shower, The White Company toiletries, double bed, TV, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities

Food & Drink
We love the sociable breakfast arrangements - Harry breaks the ice and steers things away from politics or religion. (During Covid restrictions, for social distancing reasons a second lovely panelled dining room can be used). The smoked salmon with a poached egg, served on a homemade potato cake with dill crème fraîche, is delicious.
Breakfast: cooked and continental options, locally-sourced produce. Served Mon-Fri 8-9am, Sat-Sun 8.30-9.30am.
