Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid, Spain
Madrid's grand palace hotel is full of pizazz. Enter into the bright lobby and you'll find light flooding through the crystal roof of the Palm Court, where guests in haute couture drape themselves on sofas to the sounds of Sinatra being played by the pianist. Dining here is superb, with the multi Michelin-starred Quique Dacosta at the helm overseeing everything from the room-service menu to the two Michelin-starred Deessa restaurant. Bottles of Ruinart champagne are regularly popped at the champagne bar, while cocktails are curated in the Pictura bar. A subterranean spa has a decent-sized swimming pool surrounded by marble and LED lights that mirror the formation of the stars in the sky above. Rooms and suites are lavish and come with a private butler.
Glass doors mean you can see right through the hotel to the adjacent Prado museum.
The hotel's central location means you're within walking distance of the sights including Retiro Park, Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol.
By plane: direct flights to Madrid from London (2 hours 20 minutes), Manchester (2 hours 40 minutes) and Edinburgh (2 hours 45 minutes). The hotel is a 25-minute drive from the airport. Free parking on-site. skyscanner.net
