WHAT WE LOVE...

Like so many British pubs, the Packhorse nearly went out of business a few years ago, but was rescued by local entrepreneur Philip Turner, who turned it into the contemporary country inn it is today - the first of his now rapidly expanding Chestnut Inns group, which now has almost a dozen pubs and hotels in the Suffolk/Essex region. To be honest it's no longer all that much of a pub; people don't tend to come by for a quick pint any more, but rather the focus is on food, and the boutique rooms upstairs and in the attached coachhouse. Situated just outside Newmarket, it's a lovely place to stay and not only a good base for exploring rural Suffolk but also for visiting the sights of the horseracing-mad town.

THE DETAILS

Location

The hotel overlooks the amazing 15th-century flint 'packhorse bridge' that lends the pub its name and features in its logo.

The hotel is in the picturesque Suffolk village of Moulton, surrounded by rolling green fields. Racing fans are in a prime location, with Newmarket racecourse only four miles away.
By car: The Packhorse is 1 hour 45 mins from London, 40 mins from Cambridge and 2 hours 15 mins from Nottingham. There is free parking available to guests.
By train: Kennett station is two miles away from the hotel, which can arrange a taxi to pick you up. Trains run from Cambridge (30 minutes) and Ipswich (45 minutes). Trains from London Kings Cross to Cambridge take around 50 minutes. thetrainline.com

Visitors to Newmarket who are looking for something more fashionable than the town's offerings, or weekenders looking to explore the delights of western and southern Suffolk will love it here. Considering the quality of the rooms, it's pretty good value.
