Tuddenham Mill, Newmarket, Suffolk
WHAT WE LOVE...
Tuddenham Mill is conveniently located near the A11, making it well-placed for exploring a pleasant corner of eastern England - both its rural landscapes and historic towns, such as Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge. Everything centres around the attractive brick and clapboard mill house here, which dates from 1775 and has its 50-foot chimney and the original mill wheel and grinding machinery still in place. Very comfortably appointed rooms are within the building, or in nearby recently built outbuildings, and overlook pretty water meadows or the millstream. There's a well-regarded restaurant, and a large tipi adjacent, which is especially popular when weddings are held. A lovely four-mile circular walk helps you further appreciate the beautiful surroundings, and deer and other local wildlife can be seen.

Location
We loved the tranquility of the beautiful grounds, with its meadows, weeping willows, pond and former mill stream.
The village of Tuddenham is a short drive away from Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds. Explore Thetford Forest or visit West Stow Anglo Saxon village.
By car: around 2 hours from London, and 3 hours 30 minutes from Manchester or Bristol. Free parking available.
By train: London Kings Cross to Newmarket (via Cambridge) takes 1 hour 30 minutes. The station is a 20-minute taxi from the hotel. thetrainline.com
Style & Character
It's popular with couples and race-goers visiting Newmarket. The original mill apparatus is in situ in the lounge.

Everything is of good quality and maintained to a high standard. Dogs are welcome in eight pet-friendly loft suites and in public areas except for the restaurant. Water bowls, biscuits and treats provided.

Rooms
The large, bright rooms painted light brown in the mill itself are particularly nice, and features like exposed beams and stripped wooden floors add character. We enjoyed the complimentary decanter of local gin in each room.

There's a good breakfast selection, which includes locally-smoked kippers and home-soaked muesli. The fenland parsnip soup with toasted almonds was tasty.
Tipi on the Stream: relaxed al fresco dining, magical setting. Local produce, small plates and sharing platters. Open daily, 12-6pm.
Upstairs at the Mill: characterful dining room, period features. Four AA-Rosettes, British cuisine. Open daily for dinner. Taster menu from £85.
