To the north of Livorno lies Pisa, an attractive university city best known for its Leaning Tower. Some 60 miles to the east is Florence, Tuscany's capital. The concentration of cultural attractions in Tuscany, from museums and cloisters to bridges and chapels, is second to none.

    Sicily
    Palermo, Italy

Palermo, Sicily's capital, is a marvellously jumbled, crumbling blend of old and new-a canvas upon which the region's complex and ever-shifting history has been painted.

To see some of the traces of the ancient empires that once ruled Palermo, take a day trip from Palermo to the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Greek and Roman ruins, including the Temple of Concordia, remain wonderfully intact.

In the city itself, explore the attractions in historic neighbourhoods such as the Arab district of La Kalsa, home to the finery-filled Palazzo Mirto. The Quattro Canti (Four Corners) lies in the heart of the old city, with Piazza Pretoria on the corner. From there it's only a short distance to Palermo's Norman Palace, which houses the Palatine Chapel, famous for its intricate mosaics.

Palermo is also a perfect jumping-off point for sightseeing excursions to the idyllic beaches of Mondello, the medieval coastal town of Cefalù and the mountain village of Monreale, which is known for its exceptional Norman cathedral.

    Naples
    Napoli, Italy

Today you'll head to Naples, an Italian city with a magnificent natural setting, with brooding Mount Vesuvius and the deep blue sea as a backdrop. The third-largest city in Italy, it's arguably the most colourful and seductive of them all.

Naples has something for everyone - superb restaurants, eclectic shopping, a thriving contemporary art scene and an edgy and vibrant street life. But once you've had enough of the pounding traffic and jostling crowds while sightseeing in Naples, there are endless opportunities for exploration further afield.

The celebrated Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, both victims of Vesuvius' devastating 79 A.D. eruption, lie just south of the city. The delightful town of Sorrento and the magnificent scenery of the Amalfi Coast are also within easy reach, and the dolce vita glamour of Capri - not to mention the healing thermal waters of Ischia - are a short hop from the mainland.
