Soak up beautiful scenery on nostalgic train rides through Kent and Sussex, and visit Leeds Castle and Walmer Castle

Step back in time to explore the city of Canterbury and the medieval Leeds Castle, and enjoy scenic rail journeys on some of Kent and East Sussex's railways on this five-day break in the south-east. Your trip begins among the half-timbered houses of Canterbury, home of the famous cathedral, where you'll stay in the comfortable Victoria Hotel, a short walk from the centre of the historic city.

After an introductory tour of the sights of Canterbury, including Palace Street, King's Bridge and the Old Weavers House, you'll have time to explore independently. You'll also visit the Tudor coastal fortress of Walmer Castle, which was built during the time of Henry VIII and was home to Queen Victoria as well as the Queen Mother from 1978 to 2002.

There will also be a trip to Henry VIII's Leeds Castle as well as taking in the scenery on journeys on the Canterbury & East Kent Railway, Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway and the Kent & East Sussex Railway.

Today we head into the beautiful city of Canterbury, where we join our introductory walking tour, in the company of a local guide. Sights we pass along the way include the timber-framed buildings on palace street, King's bridge, and the Old Weavers House - look out for the old ducking stool here! We'll also see the Buttermarket, the very striking Beaney institute building, and the Cathedral Precincts. At the end of the guided tour, you can explore the city at leisure.

This afternoon we head to Shepherdswell for a ride on the East Kent Railway, a former industrial line that served the Kent coalfield. After our train returns to Shepherdswell, you have the chance to hop on the little Woodland Miniature railway for a short ride around the beautiful woodlands here. To round off your afternoon, make sure to look at the model railway which is housed in two train coaches in the station.

    Walmer, United Kingdom

This morning we enjoy an eight-mile journey on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch railway, between New Romney and Hythe, where we will be powered along the track by a one-third full size locomotive. We then continue by coach to the seaside town of Deal where there's time for lunch.

We continue our journey along the coast for an afternoon visit to Walmer Castle and Gardens. Walmer is a coastal castle and at one time was a Tudor artillery fortress, built during the time of Henry VIII. By 1727, Walmer Castle was made an official residence by The Duke of Dorset and in 1829, the Duke of Wellington was made Lord warden. He died at Walmer Castle, and his room is now displayed as it was when he died. Other famous residents included Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and from 1978 -2002, the Queen Mother. With over eight acres of gardens and woodland there is plenty to explore, including the Broadwalk Garden, the Queen Mother's garden and the Sunken Glen Garden.
