Fall in love with the dramatic landscapes of North Wales on a guided tour of its best-loved gardens and towns, alongside Gardeners’ World presenter Joe Swift

North Wales is home to truly magical scenery - from the mountains of Snowdonia to the dramatic seascapes of Llandudno and Anglesey, not to mention the ancient castles dotted around the landscape. It's also a prime spot for garden-lovers.

On this four-day summertime tour, you'll visit one of the region's best gardens, Plas Cadnant, which was an overgrown, abandoned wilderness until its stunning revival 25 years ago. Today it is compared to Cornwall's Heligan Gardens - a quirky and characterful gem.

Joining you at Plas Cadnant will be garden expert and TV broadcaster Joe Swift, who will point out some of his favourite parts and offer insights into the unique garden. Later, Joe will give an after-dinner private talk about his experiences as a TV gardener with some great behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes.

You'll also take in Maenen Hall on the slopes of the Conwy Valley, with its spectacular views of Snowdonia, the gardens at Nanhoron Regency mansion with their Rose Walk, orchards and glasshouse and the National Trust Bodnant Garden, which features botanical collections from all over the world.

Other highlights include lunch and a tour of the parklands and gardens at Bodrhyddan Hall and a morning exploring Portmeirion, an eccentric and surreal Italianate village on the Snowdonia Coast with pastel-coloured houses and sub-tropical gardens.

Your accommodation for three nights will be the historic Celtic Royal Hotel in Caernarfon. Dating back to the 18th century, the hotel was once frequented by Queen Victoria and today provides comfortable and spacious accommodation in contemporary style. All rooms have private bathrooms and the hotel also boasts a 16-metre swimming pool with Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room.

Also included is a signed copy of 'Great Gardens of Wales' (one per booking), written by your tour guide, the former Head Forester at Westonbirt Arboretum, Tony Russell, a proud resident of North Wales.

Itinerary

  1. Day
    1
    Bodnant Garden
    Bodnant Garden, United Kingdom

Depart by coach for Wales, where your tour begins with a visit to Bodnant Garden, situated above the River Conwy, spanning some 80 acres overlooking the valley towards Snowdonia. The garden has two parts - the upper garden around Bodnant Hall, which consists of the terraced gardens and informal lawns, and the lower garden - known as the "Dell", formed by the River Hiraethlyn and containing the wild garden. Bodnant has a range of beautiful plants from all over the world, particularly China, North America, Europe and Japan, which are suited to the Welsh climate and soil.

Later, you'll continue on to your comfortable accommodation at the Celtic Royal Hotel, Caernarfon, where dinner will be served this evening.

  2. Day
    2
    Nanhoron and Portmeirion
    Portmeirion, United Kingdom

This morning, after breakfast, you'll visit the private garden of Nanhoron, set around a house which was completed in 1803. In recent years the Long Border has been revived and replanted with yew buttresses dividing it into compartments and the pergola round the pool carries wisteria and roses. This pool was extended to form a rill and water feature at the beginning of 2006. The East Garden is laid out as a nineteenth-century kitchen garden. The paths have been re-laid, restoring the old quadrants of the garden, box hedges replanted, a Rose Walk created, the old orchard revived and a crab-apple orchard created. The glasshouse shelters for four varieties of table grapes. In front of it is a herb garden on the site of old cold frames.

Following breakfast, you'll check out of the hotel and head for Portmeirion, the famous Italianate village. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis acquired the site for Portmeirion in 1925 for less than £5,000 as it was then "a neglected wilderness." Over the course of 50 years the village was developed in a unique and wonderfully eccentric style, while staying in harmony with the natural surroundings. You'll take a walk in 'The Gwyllt', a display woodland where the major concentrations of Rhododendron, Azalea and Camellia were planted, with a wide variety of choice trees. Refreshments (not included) are available in the Portmeirion Hotel, the Town Hall self-service restaurant and Cadwaladers Ice Cream Parlour.

Later, return to the hotel where dinner is served.

  3. Day
    3
    Maenan Hall and Plas Cadnant
    Maenan, United Kingdom

This morning, after breakfast, you'll travel to the privately-owned garden of Maenan Hall, a beautiful property on the slopes of the Conwy Valley, with dramatic views of Snowdonia, set amongst mature hardwoods. Both the upper part, with sweeping lawns, ornamental ponds and retaining walls, and the bluebell carpeted woodland dell contain copious specimen shrubs and trees, many originating at Bodnant. Magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias, pieris, cherries and hydrangeas, amongst many others, make for a breath-taking display.

This afternoon you'll visit Plas Cadnant, a hidden historic garden which is slowly being uncovered - a Welsh 'Lost Gardens of Heligan'. Three different gardens have been discovered, including an unusual walled garden with curving walls and a pool, a secret valley garden with three waterfalls and a river, and an upper woodland garden with stone outcrops and the remains of a 19th-century folly.

You will be joined here by TV gardener Joe Swift, who will give his own insights into this unique garden. After dinner this evening Joe will entertain with a talk on his experiences as a TV gardener with some great behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes.

    Meals - Breakfast, Dinner
  4. Day
    4
    Bodrhyddan
    Bodrhyddan Hall, United Kingdom

Following breakfast, you'll check out of the hotel and depart for Bodrhyddan Hall, a stunning Grade I listed stately home, steeped in history and home to a rich tapestry of stories and tales. The house is set in 12 acres of picturesque gardens, including a formal parterre, flowing lawns and an extensive pleasance. Following a tour of the garden with Tony Russell, you will enjoy a light lunch.

Following lunch, you'll depart for home, and arrive back at your original departure points in the late evening.
